A random sample of 152 faculty (76% return rate) at the University of Maryland, College Park completed a version of the Situational Attitude Scale - Commuter, which assessed their differential attitudes toward commuting versus resident students in a situational context. Data were analyzed by t-tests at the .05 level, and only 7 of 60 items were responded to differentially by faculty, which is what would be expected by chance. Thus, there is no evidence that faculty differentiate among students based on their residence. These results are in contrast to those found among student personnel staff, who tended to have more negative attitudes toward commuters than resident students. Possible reasons for the differences in responses of the faculty and student personnel staff are discussed, as are implications for students and past and future research on the topic. (Author/MSE)
