California Migrant Student Movement Study--Region 2 Analysis.
Davis, Benjamin G.
Region 2 of the California Migrant Education Program, located along the northern California coast and inland, includes 13 contiguous counties north of a line between San Francisco and Sacramento and the two counties in the northwest and northeast corners of the state. Using data extracted from the Migrant Student Record Transfer System, a study was undertaken to define movement patterns of migrant students from, to and within the state. Data showed that 351 migrant students entered the Region from another state in 1977. The major receiving counties were Sutter, Yolo and Colusa counties. Of the 308 departing students, 94% left for Texas, Washington, Oregon and Arizona. Intrastate movement figures showed 5,364 migrant students entered Region 2 schools and 5,397 left them. Ninety-seven percent of the movement was between schools in the region. When data from 1975, 1976 and 1977 were compared, a significant increase was seen in either settling out or in very localized movement within the state. Between 1975 and 1976 there was a 13% increase in the number of nonmobile students and 10% more was noted in 1977. This document includes tabular data on interstate and intrastate movement. Data includes state, regional and county information in such areas as origins, destinations, numbers, and grade levels of migrant students. Data of intrastate movement in 1975, 1976 and 1977 are compared. (DS)
