Toolbox for Student Trauma: Highlighting the School Mental Health Special Issue on Trauma-Informed Schools

Growing evidence of the prevalence of and educational consequences related to childhood trauma exposure has led to a national focus on equipping schools to support the specific needs of students who have experienced trauma. As the trauma-informed care movement gains momentum, educators, practitioners, and researchers are collaborating to operationalize trauma-informed principles of care in schools. A special issue on trauma-informed schools in the multidisciplinary journal "School Mental Health" provides valuable resources that educators and school-based mental health professionals can use to realize the prevalence and impact of trauma exposure, recognize the symptoms of trauma, and respond to students exposed to trauma. The special issue also provides a blueprint for trauma-informed service delivery in schools, developed using a multitiered framework, and showcases three case studies of schools employing a multitiered framework to implement trauma-informed approaches. This article provides a brief overview of studies included in the trauma-informed schools special issue of "School Mental Health."
