Choosing Sides: There Is a Global Struggle over Open Access and No Immediate Answer to the Dilemma. Where Are Librarians in This Debate?
Van Orsdel, Lee C.; Born, Kathleen
Library Journal, v130 n7 p43 Apr 2005
This year's periodicals price study looks at these and other factors that are reshaping the serials marketplace. Three Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) databases--Arts and Humanities Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Science Citation Index--provide the 4,893 titles used in the study. These databases typically reflect the journal holdings of large research libraries. For smaller academic libraries, we include an analysis of 2,759 journals in EBSCO Publishing's Academic Search Premier. This article gives the results of this study in detail. Some of the sections included in the article are: (1) Price engineering for 2005; (2) It's the cost, stupid; (3) Well, it's also the impact; (4) Ditching print in America; (5) Scandal du jour; (6) Parliamentary backbone; and (7) Playing U.S. hardball.
