Overcoming the Gap between Diversity Recruitment Research and Practice
Bocanegra, Joel O.
Communique, v40 n8 p1, 28-29 Jun 2012
The profession of school psychology has repeatedly advocated for increasing the diversity of its membership. However, the production of diversity recruitment research has not coalesced with the urgency espoused by organizations governing school psychology. This gap between official organizational position and production of literature has contributed to an environment where graduate programs are encouraged to recruit diverse students with limited research to guide and support their efforts. This lack of direction, coupled with an underdeveloped understanding of the benefits of diversity, can create a stagnation in diversity recruitment practices, which likely contributes to the present diversity recruitment impasse. Hence, the diversity recruitment gap is best conceptualized as a triadic gap among policy, research, and practice. To overcome these gaps, the author suggests that renewed focus must be brought to diversity recruitment research with special emphases on recruitment strategies, understanding diversity, and recruitment models. In this article, the author discusses and offers strategies for overcoming these gaps with the intention of helping school psychology to not only meet its goal of significantly diversifying the field, but also to do it in a purposeful and impacting manner.
