Blogging Is So Last Year--Now Podcasting Is Hot. Online Treasures
Balas, Janet L.
Computers in Libraries, v25 n10 p29-32 Nov-Dec 2005
This column describes the latest innovation in iPod use, podcasts, which are audio files that can be downloaded and played either through a computer or an MP3 player such as an iPod. Because they are feeds, users can subscribe to podcasts and have them downloaded automatically to their computers. The author discusses ways in which podcasts may be valuable to librarians and gives examples of professionally-relevant podcasts (SearchEngineWatch, PALINET's IR Conversations, and OPAL archives). Also described are several library-related podcasting projects, such as LibriVox, an open source project to record and distribute podcasts of public domain books; and the Spoken Alexandria Project, which aims to create a free library of spoken word recordings (both in the public domain and modern works for which permission has been granted).
