This book provides an historical overview of American student activism from 1900 to the present with emphasis on the period from 1900 to 1960. An introduction to this edition reviews student activism since 1970 concluding that, despite brief sparks of activism such as the anti-apartheid struggle, there are currently no national or regional organizations with the ability to project a political voice for students nationally. Chapters in the book focus on the following topics: (1) the stirring of student activism from 1900 to 1930; (2) development of the leftist movement during the thirties; (3) the postwar years, marked by liberal currents amid apathy; (4) sporadic radical and other movements during the fifties; and (5) the revival of student activism during the late fifties; and (6) the new left in the context of American student activism.
