15th Annual School Construction Report, 2010
Abramson, Paul
School Planning & Management
School construction in 2009 fell 16 percent from one year ago, to just $16.4 billion, the lowest annual total for school construction since 1998. Indications are that it will fall further this year. "School Planning & Management" received reports on school construction completed and underway during 2009 and planned to start in 2010 from Market Data Retrieval (MDR), a company of Dun and Bradstreet (D&B). MDR contacts school districts throughout the United States seeking information on their construction plans--new buildings, additions to existing buildings and major retrofit projects. "School Planning & Management" takes that project information and uses it to estimate construction on a national and regional basis, and to report on how dollars are being spent on new schools. This report provides an overview of national statistics on school construction completed in 2009, school construction currently underway, and projections for 2010. Additionally, figures are given for each of the 12 regions of the United States. The figures show the total amount of construction activity by year and how that money was spent, on new schools, additions or renovations. They also show by year what percentage of money in each region goes into elementary schools, middle schools, high schools and district projects. Finally, for new schools only the median cost per square foot, cost per student and square foot per student for elementary schools, middle schools and high schools in each region are shown. Also shown is the median project size, including overall cost, number of students accommodated and size of the building. [For the 2009 report, see ED565274.]
