Over the Ramp: Building Bridges
Sutton, Mary
Teaching Artist Journal, v5 n3 p205-213 Aug 2007
TheatreWorks is the third largest theatre in the San Francisco bay area. Through the usual educational programs that $6 million companies tend to offer, it has reached over 100,000 students of all ages in the past 8 years. The TheatreWorks Bridges Projects, however, are special. They are intricate and expansive, work with multiple community groups, and tend to be labor intensive. They are designed to bring the work on stage directly into the context of the community. They are programs that use a panoply of community art-making activities, such as oral history interviews, group poem making, and photo and video documentations. In this article, the author describes a student photography project, inspired by August Wilson's "Fences," that crosses race and class lines.
