Taking the Worry Out of Work-Based Learning. The Law, Labor & School-to-Careers.
Potosky, Alice
This book contains information, case examples, resources, and ideas to help eliminate the fears of businesses with regard to legal and labor issues and get them involved in school-to-careers (STC) systems. It contains five chapters that cover the following: (1) the need for and the benefits of employer involvement in school-to-careers systems and potential barriers to their participation; (2) what the School-to-Work Opportunities Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, and child labor laws have to say about placing students in the workplace and how to distinguish between employment and learning experiences; (3) why terms such as liability, workers' compensation, accident insurance, and confidentiality and bonding are not problems; (4) how to ensure that work-based learning efforts will have employers' full support--creating a safe, meaningful, and productive experience for all students; and (5) putting all the information together, with an emphasis on communication that avoids misperceptions and assures employers that, in school-to-careers, the benefits spread evenly and everybody wins. Eight appendixes include the following: 35 resources, a work-based learning opportunities chart, lists of regional wage-hour offices and state child labor contacts; application of state and federal child labor laws, and lists of state workers' compensation offices, state union contacts, and state school-to-work coordinators.
