Defining Peace
Lindsay, Marie Huseman
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v108 n7 p40-41 Mar 2009
This article presents an elementary studio lesson that aims to nurture students' knowledge of peace with art-making activities that enable them to discover the dynamic events that can develop within its presence. Through this lesson, students learn that peace, like art, does not happen on its own, but it is created. This lesson helps students understand that peace is the absence of war and fighting and can be experienced in silence and solitude, but it is also a state of existence that allows people to enjoy the things they like to do without being hampered by conflict, prejudice, or injustice. The art-making activities in this lesson enable students to learn how individual, responsible, peace-oriented behaviors can coalesce to create a society that is free from conflict, prejudice, enmity, and injustice.
