Connecting with Every Child: Key to Successful Discipline. Reframing Discipline, Unit 2. [Teaching Video, Practice Video, Facilitator's Guide, and Viewer's Guide].
The second of three interactive staff development units on discipline in early childhood classrooms, this multi-media pack explores the importance of the relationship between the teacher and child to discipline. The 25-minute teaching videotape notes the need to build a relationship with a child by interacting at times other than when the child is misbehaving. It also explores a technique for building a relationship: acknowledgment, of a child's positive behavior and of the child's feelings and emotions. The practice video, also 25 minutes, presents 3 interactive exercises intended to help teachers shift their focus from one of teaching a curriculum to one of building relationships. The exercises cover: (1) what the message is, exploring how children feel when not acknowledged or when their feelings are not validated; (2) steps for acknowledging what a child is doing, such as describing what we notice and using face, voice, and gestures to indicate interest and enthusiasm; and (3) steps for acknowledging what children feel, such as describing the feelings the child is manifesting, and showing empathy and concern. Print materials in the multi-media kit include a facilitator's guide with before-viewing questions and after-viewing discussion questions and a viewer's guide with worksheets for each of the three exercises in the practice video.
