Doing the Groundwork: From Stopping Misbehavior to Teaching Skills. Reframing Discipline, Unit 1. [Teaching Video, Practice Video, Facilitator's Guide, and Viewer's Guide].
The first of three interactive staff development units on discipline in early childhood classrooms, this multi-media pack explores how to evaluate the attitudes teachers take into the classroom, and how to "reframe" those attitudes so teachers can effectively manage--rather than try to eliminate--conflict. The 25-minute teaching videotape examines how teachers' attitudes influence the way they react to behavior problems, exploring some of those attitudes, such as "dealing with the same kids over and over again takes away from real teaching." The video then notes that discipline is intended to teach new skills, and suggests that teaching social skills is as important as any other part of the preschool curriculum. The practice video, also 25 minutes, presents 3 interactive exercises intended to help teachers reframe their attitudes so they can think in terms of teaching rather than reacting. The exercises cover: (1) breaking the cycle of reacting, by helping the viewer identify strong feelings/reactions to certain behaviors, and question what he or she believes about children's behavior and why; (2) reframing the "problem child", by helping the viewer to think in terms of "problem behavior" instead and to teach skills needed to help the child manage his or her own behavior; and (3) intervening to teach, exploring the technique of a "stop" message, followed by a "teaching" message which lets the child know what is expected and how he or she can achieve it. Print materials in the multimedia kit include a facilitator's guide with before-viewing questions and after-viewing discussion questions and a viewer's guide with worksheets for each of the three exercises on the practice video.
