Peer reviewedCarlson, David H. – Information Technology and Libraries, 1986
This article discusses tools developed to aid the systems analysis process (program evaluation and review technique, Gantt charts, organizational charts, decision tables, flowcharts, hierarchy plus input-process-output). Similarities and differences among techniques, library applications of analysis, structured systems analysis, and the data flow…

Peer reviewedOttenbacher, Kenneth J. – Journal of Special Education, 1990
The agreement between visual analysis and the results of the split-middle method of trend estimation was examined using a set of 24 stimulus graphs and 30 raters. Results revealed poor agreement between the two methods, and low sensitivity, specificity, and predictive ability for visual analysis in relation to statistical inferences. (JDD)

Utilizing the Spreadsheet and Charting Capabilities of Microsoft Works in the Mathematics Classroom.
Peer reviewedWood, Judith Body – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1990
Presented are ideas for the utilization of Microsoft Works in the secondary mathematics classroom. The spreadsheet and graphing capabilities of this software package are demonstrated for several topics including the concept of slope for first year algebra, and creating and interpreting graphs for a general mathematics class. McKnight, Curtis C.; And Others – 1990
The ability to think critically in the presence of arguments with essential quantitative elements, most often graphical elements, will become an essential skill for educated citizens in the future. This paper takes one specific graphical display, a narrow series of observational and interpretational tasks related to a graph, and using a small set…

Mershon, Clarence – 1986
In 1972, the Oregon State Department of Education changed its standards relating to graduation requirements after a survey revealed concern that the high school diploma had lost its credibility. Parkrose School District developed a goal-based curriculum and measurement program to meet the new requirements. From the program's inception, District…

Tatsuoka, Kikumi K. – 1982
This study introduced a probabilistic model utilizing item response theory (IRT) for dealing with a variety of misconceptions. The model can be used for evaluating the transition behavior of error types, advancement of learning stages, or the stability and persistence of particular misconceptions. Moreover, it apparently can be used for relating…

Peer reviewedEnser, P. G. B. – Journal of Documentation, 1985
Investigates techniques for automatic classification of book material focusing on: computer-based surrogation of monographic material, book surrogate clustering on basis of content association, evaluation of resultant classifications. Test collection (250 books) is described with surrogation by means of back-of-the-book index, table of contents,…

Hernon, Peter; McClure, Charles R. – Library Journal, 1986
Reports results of unobtrusive testing of reference service (asking reference questions of library staff who are unaware of being evaluated) in government documents and central reference areas of 26 U.S. libraries. Accuracy of answers, interview and search process duration, referral, and use of catalog and technology are highlighted. (12…

Peer reviewedSmith, F. J.; Devine, K. – Information Processing and Management, 1985
Zipfian laws for frequency distributions of word pairs and longer phrases are derived from text sample analysis. From crossing of Zipfian curves, it is deduced that number of multi-word phrases that occur frequently in text is surprisingly small, of same order of magnitude as number of individual word-types. Vonder Embse, Charles Bernard, Jr. – 1987
A graph is an example of a symbol system which encodes information through the juxtaposition of marks in a two dimensional plane; decoding the meaning of a graph uses specific attributes of the human visual system. This study was undertaken to identify some variables critical to graph interpretation as a first step in designing better curriculum…

Swoope, Karen; Johnson, Carole Schulte – 1985
Two studies were conducted of students in grades 1-12 in Washington state to determine how children at various grade levels perceived males' and females' interest in using computers. A 46-item instrument was field tested using 124 students from three small school districts whose administrators had volunteered to participate. Four sections of an…

Clancey, William J. – 1985
A broad range of well-structured problems--embracing forms of diagnosis, catalog selection, and skeletal planning--are solved in expert computer systems by the method of heuristic classification. These programs have a characteristic inference structure that systematically relates data to a pre-enumerated set of solutions by abstraction, heuristic…

Collis, Betty, Ed. – Computing Teacher, 1988
Summarizes six research studies relating to computers in education. The research areas include the use of computer-generated graphs in critical evaluation and in learning distance and velocity concepts, sex differences in graphing skills, student evaluation of courseware, career paths of women with technological education, and characteristics of…

Peer reviewedFischhoff, Baruch; MacGregor, Donald – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1986
Reports on study that used set of measures for characterizing performance with different databases and set of hypotheses for predicting search difficulties based on cognitive processes involved in decision-making aspects of information search. Highlights include confidence assessment, system design criteria, transparency, metatransparency, and…

Peer reviewedHiscox, Michael D. – Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, 1984
This article describes a number of problems every educational measurement specialist should be prepared to confront before using microcomputers to support test-related activities, including problems with hardware, with software, and with implementing a system. It concludes with a checklist for planning a microcomputer application. (BW)
