Driscoll, Marcy P.; Tessmer, Martin – Educational Technology, 1985
Discusses development of rational set generator--an overall method for creating a rational set of examples to teach concepts and evaluate student knowledge levels--which combines formulas for creating examples measuring discrimination and generalization. Also discussed are results of a study to test the efficacy of a rational set generator. (MBR)

Peer reviewedRoyer, James M.; And Others – Review of Educational Research, 1993
Procedures that could be used to assess progress in instructional programs designed to enhance cognitive skills are reviewed, discussing measures of the following parameters: (1) knowledge acquisition, organization, and structure; (2) problem representation; (3) mental models; (4) metacognitive skills; (5) automaticity of performance; and (6)…

Horton, Jane; Ryba, Ken – Computing Teacher, 1986
This study used the Model for Assessing Learning with Logo (Nolan and Ryba) to examine effects of Logo programming on junior high school students' thinking skills. The model addresses both student acquisition of Logo-related thinking skills and the extent to which they transfer skills to noncomputer problem solving tasks. (MBR)

Early intervention professionals (N=95) rated their own knowledge and skills in 16 areas of competency. The paper analyzes the distinction between knowledge and skills, identification of item clusters, and changes in ratings over time. Findings provide partial support for the usefulness of self-ratings in the context of inservice education. (JDD)

Usnick, Virginia E.; Brown, Sue – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1992
Interpersonal Process Recall (IPR) is a technique in which audiotapes are used to evoke students' memories concerning their own thinking. Reports a study using IPR to probe elementary students' (n=17) thinking during a problem-solving situation. Concluded that IPR has potential in classroom research. (MDH)

Petersen, Nicole M.; And Others – 1987
This study evaluated a college level Introductory Psychology course taken by 23 precocious adolescents during a three-week summer residential program. This evaluation measured not only knowledge gain, but also understanding, generalization, and application of that knowledge. Immediate post measures of participants' knowledge, understanding, and…

Peer reviewedDavis, Gary Ernest – Mathematics Education Research Journal, 1989
Describes the method of having children observe videotapes of other children's mathematics activities to gain insights into the observing children's thought processes and the observed children's activities. Discusses the applications of this method as a research tool and as a probe for classroom teachers in evaluating students. (MDH)
