Utilizing the Spreadsheet and Charting Capabilities of Microsoft Works in the Mathematics Classroom.
Peer reviewedWood, Judith Body – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1990
Presented are ideas for the utilization of Microsoft Works in the secondary mathematics classroom. The spreadsheet and graphing capabilities of this software package are demonstrated for several topics including the concept of slope for first year algebra, and creating and interpreting graphs for a general mathematics class. (Author/CW)

Peer reviewedSettlage, John, Jr. – Science Education, 1995
Investigated the appropriateness of microcomputer-based laboratories (MBLs) for elementary school students. Reports that children expanded their repertoire of graph-making and interpreting skills and MBLs supported scientific inquiry for and by the children. (28 references) (Author/JRH)

Goldenberg, E. Paul; And Others – 1988
This report summarizes the work of a two-year project which focused primarily on the problems that students have with algebra in general, and graphs in particular. The first of two major sections in the document deals with the use of computer software to assist in the teaching of graphing. It concludes that thoughtful design and use of graphing…

Svec, Michael T. – 1995
Graphs of objects in motion are frequently used in introductory high school or college physics courses since they offer a valuable alternative to verbal and algebraic descriptions by offering students another way of manipulating the developing concepts. If graphs are to be a valuable tool for students, then the level of the students' graphing…

Shields, Mark – Perspectives in Computing: Applications in the Academic and Scientific Community, 1986
Discusses conclusions based on results of two Brown University research projects aimed at understanding social and educational significance of computing in higher education: 1984 university-wide survey of students, faculty, and staff, and a 1985 survey of incoming freshmen. The conclusions discussed relate to computer use, experience, attitudes,…

Peer reviewedSchwarz, Baruch; Bruckheimer, Maxim – School Science and Mathematics, 1990
The Triple Representation Model of problem solving is presented. The use of microcomputers in this problem-solving environment is discussed, and examples are provided. The integration of this method into the mathematics curriculum is described. (CW)

Adams, D. Daryl; Shrum, John W. – 1988
Effects of microcomputer-based laboratory (MBL) exercises and level of cognitive development on high school biology students' ability to construct and interpret line graphs were investigated. Forty-six students enrolled in general biology classes at a rural high school volunteered to participate in the study. These students were administered…

Peer reviewedStuessy, Carol L.; Rowland, Paul M. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1989
Discusses a microcomputer-based laboratory (MBL) study (n=75) which uses multiple temperature gathering devices (mercury thermometer, digital thermometer, and computer probe) and graphing methods (hand graphs, delayed computer graphs, and real-time graphs). Reports that MBL real-time graphing provides significant increases in graphing skills. (MVL)
