Paul, Douglas J.; And Others – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1986
A 15-item story problem test was written at three readability levels (below grade 4, grades 4-6, above grade 6) by two methods (vocabulary control and sentence control). Six test forms were administered to 1158 children in grades 3-6. Readability level had no effect on problem difficulty. (Author/MNS)

Laster, Janet F. – Vocational Education Journal, 1985
Presents suggestions for helping students broaden their learning skills: tell students you plan to help them learn to learn, hold class discussions where students share learning strategies, give students practice using unfamiliar learning strategies, pick a complex learning exercise and present it in steps, and vary your approach over the course…

Catron, Carol E.; Kendall, Earline D. – Young Children, 1984
Describes a staff evaluation program based on Gordon's (1977) model. Presents a system of monthly individual conferences where child care staff discuss their productive work areas, what they or their supervisors perceive to be problems, and ideas for improvement. Many suggestions are given for planning and conducting conferences. (CB)

O'Daffer, Phares G. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1984
Presents a problem-solving activity in which students first guess and then check their answer. Also presents an activity to help students develop skill in understanding the question in a problem and a suggestion to help develop a classroom climate conducive to problem-solving. (JN)

Neumann, Phyllis – Instructor, 1984
Teachers often have difficulty responding to emotionally upset children in ways that help the students solve their problems. Examples of commonly used "put-downs and put-offs" and suggested techniques that teachers can use to lend emotional support are offered. (DF)

Ganderton, Paul R. – Mathematics in School, 1985
Discusses the nature of and the steps involved in a mathematical investigation, suggesting that a mathematical investigation can be used as a tool for developing mathematical processes in learners. Several examples of investigations suitable for secondary levels are included. (JN)

Snider, Richard G. – Science Teacher, 1985
The ratio factors approach involves recognizing a given fraction, then multiplying so that units cancel. This approach, which is grounded in concrete operational thinking patterns, provides a standard for science ratio and proportion problems. Examples are included for unit conversions, mole problems, molarity, speed/density problems, and…

Sadowski, Barbara – School Science and Mathematics, 1985
Describes three studies in which students (N=515; N=60; N=135) were asked to indicate appropriate operations and numbers used in solving open mathematical sentences. Analysis of data and interviews suggest two error patterns: "finding a solution" and "inverse operation." Indicates that "finding a solution" strategy…
