Peer reviewedBrazier, Gerald; Watkins, Will – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1986
Points out the benefits of students using LOGO with problems dealing with vectors and matrices. Provides examples of performing linear algebraic computations in LOGO. (ML)
Descriptors: Algebra, Computer Science Education, Computer Uses in Education, Mathematical Applications
Peer reviewedBronson, Richard – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1986
Suggests the use of computer simulation of continuous systems as a problem solving approach to computer languages. Outlines the procedures that the system dynamics approach employs in computer simulations. Explains the advantages of the special purpose language, DYNAMO. (ML)
Descriptors: Computer Science Education, Computer Simulation, Computer Uses in Education, Interdisciplinary Approach
Bitter, Gary; And Others – Curriculum Review, 1986
Argues that trends in upper elementary and higher education computer science programs should lead to programming as focus of high school computer curriculum, and reviews philosophies supporting teaching of programming. Advantages and disadvantages of using Pascal and other languages are discussed and compared. Teacher information sources on Pascal…

Technological Horizons in Education, 1986
Describes the implementation of an information technology program designed to increase computer literacy of teachers and enable them to apply computer technology in the classroom. Traces development from introduction in state legislature to evaluation of the first year of operation. (JM)
Descriptors: Computer Literacy, Computer Science Education, Computers, Elementary Secondary Education
Classroom Computer Learning, 1984
Five computer-oriented classroom activities are suggested. They include: Logo programming to help students develop estimation, logic and spatial skills; creating flow charts; inputting data; making snowflakes using Logo; and developing and using a database management program. (JN)
Descriptors: Class Activities, Computer Graphics, Computer Science Education, Elementary Education
Peer reviewedCaravella, Joseph R. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1983
Resources and suggestions for establishing systems for coping with change are discussed. People are seen as the most important component in information systems, but teachers are no longer the primary disseminators of knowledge in our society. Teachers are seen as guides and coordinators of learning about technology within the classroom. (MP)
Descriptors: Computer Science, Computers, Educational Change, Educational Technology
Computing Teacher, 1983
A curriculum to enhance computer literacy in grades K-8 is presented, which covers the areas of computer awareness, computer interaction skills, social sciences, language arts, science, and mathematics. Student tasks are outlined with suggested grade levels for skills to be introduced, expanded, and reinforced. (EJS)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Literacy, Computer Science Education, Elementary Education
Piele, Donald T. – Creative Computing, 1981
A series of lessons designed to promote problem-solving skills by encouraging students to write programs is presented. All samples of solutions are written in BASIC. (MP)
Descriptors: Computer Programs, Computer Science Education, Discovery Learning, Instructional Materials
Noonan, Larry – Creative Computing, 1981
Two programs designed to analyze reading selections and post a grade level based on number of syllables and phonetic make-up are presented. The materials are written in BASIC for a PET computer. The program, designed to analyze the phonics, is thoroughly documented. (MP)
Descriptors: Computer Programs, Computer Science, Computers, Educational Technology
Piele, Donald T. – Creative Computing, 1980
The use of the computer in problem solving situations is profiled. Sample lessons for beginning, intermediate, and advanced students are presented along with possible programs for a variety of computers using BASIC. (MP)
Descriptors: Computer Programs, Computer Science Education, Enrichment Activities, Learning Activities
Potts, Michael – Creative Computing, 1980
The need for a strong package of computer software in a computer science-oriented program is discussed. Ways of accumulating software and selective reviews of available computer assisted instruction (CAI) programs are also presented. (MP)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Oriented Programs, Computer Programs, Computer Science
Peer reviewedZukas, Walter X.; And Others – Arithmetic Teacher, 1980
A minicourse designed to teach fourth and fifth graders about computers included decoding computer cards, a "race" against the computer, a field trip, flow charting, and writing computer programs. The course was limited by the students' ability to understand abstract mathematical concepts. (MP)
Descriptors: Activity Units, Computer Science Education, Computers, Elementary Education
Peer reviewedRae, John – Computers and Education, 1990
Describes a case study approach to teaching database design principles to undergraduate students that is based on a library database. Topics discussed include database management systems, relational models, entity relationship models, many-to-many relationships, normalization, and producing a working database. (three references) (LRW)
