Bullying often persists in spite of formal programs targeting this problem. Supportive school and classroom communities enlist brave peers in consoling, encouraging, and befriending victims, which removes the status that fuels bullies. For the past 18 years, this author has worked in multiple children's agencies and schools, studying bullying dynamics and intending to help eliminate forms of bullying all together. The author believes that educators will not be effective at addressing bullying unless they facilitate meaningful elements in the environments that support it. The fuel supply for bullies needs to be cut off at its source. The author suggests four ideas to focus on and encourages others working with children and adolescents to share this same focus.
