Foundations in Elementary Education: Overview.
Hohmann, Charles
The cornerstone of the High/Scope approach to early elementary education is the belief that active learning is fundamental to the full development of human potential and that active learning occurs most effectively in settings that provide developmentally appropriate learning opportunities. This guide and accompanying videotape are intended to acquaint parents, teachers, and administrators with the High/Scope model. The first three sections of the guide explore High/Scope's fundamental goals and purposes, psychological foundations, and organization and management of the classroom environment. The next five sections detail the High/Scope approach to instruction in language and literacy, mathematics, science, movement, and music. The guide's final section reviews evidence of the effectiveness of the approach. The guide's accompanying videotape presents classroom scenes from High/Scope programs in a range of settings, illustrating such core components of the approach as the "plan-do-review" sequence, small-group workshops, and classroom interest areas equipped for specific kinds of learning. The videotape also introduces High/Scope's guides for language and literacy, math, science, movement, and music. (HTH)
