A Time for Transition. Teenage Parents and Employment.

This publication reports on a study to examine the failures of social institutions to prepare teenage parents to support themselves and their chldren. Chapter 1 explores issues involved in helping young parents achieve economic independence. Obstacles to economic self-sufficiency are discussed. Chapter 2 reviews existing programs' attempts to meet the goal of economic self-sufficiency. Approaches that work are briefly described, and a program planning checklist is provided. Chapter 3 reviews the steps involved in building a community coalition with sufficient expertise and clout to act successfully as an advocate for change in policies that affect local service delivery. Chapter 4 considers the policy implications of improving services for teenage parents. Chapter 5 makes recommendations for an advocacy agenda. Chapter 6 provides information on additional resources to consult about improving employment and other important services for young parents. Organizations, publications, and programs are included.
