A Contrastive Analysis of English and Arabic in Relativization.
Tushyeh, Hanna Y.
Points of similarity and contrast between English and Modern Standard Arabic in relativization are examined. It is concluded that while the relativization process is essentially the same in both languages, they differ with respect to the relative pronoun, the agreement of the relative pronoun with its antecedent, and the appearance of the resumptive pronoun in Modern Standard Arabic. In addition, these features of relativization in the two languages are analyzed: restrictive and non-restrictive relative clause formation, nominal and verbal relatives, subject and object relatives, free relatives, multiple embeddings, and the noun phrase accessibility hierarchy in relation to relativization.
