Presents methods teachers can try to increase the likelihood of a referral to counseling services being followed through and of a successful outcome of therapy. Suggests eight guidelines for faculty members to use in counseling students informally. Suggests by listening carefully and being alert to student problems professors can aid students in thinking through their difficulties. The authors studied truancy in junior high school students through structured interviews with 33 truants. Truancy at this age was commonly associated with significant difficulties at home, at school, and with peers. Two types of truants were delineated: "authority-defying" and "peer phobic."
