Children take enormous pride in their drawing abilities. They like bringing to life a specific object whether it is a star or a cat or a tree, and they will likely be frustrated until they can get it just right. Drawing is a way of thinking in motion, the brain guiding the hand, and it demonstrates strongly another type of intelligence. As a process, it enables children to express themselves, experiment, wander and play, unlock a memory, or relive a dream. For children, drawing is not just an activity to pass the time away. It may be their way of figuring things out, of trying to visualize some of their dreams and concerns. It may even help them to relax and be contemplative. The process of drawing empowers children, allowing them to make choices. They can try to capture a delicious moment or go on a journey or design a new world. In this article, the author describes 17 children's books that illustrate the stories of child artists and how the process of drawing empowers them. A list of follow-up activities is also included.
