Read and Rise: Preparing Our Children for a Lifetime of Success.
Brown, Kia
This guide presents information and ideas to help parents support their children as they grow into readers. It provides literacy-building activities that parents can use to help their children acquire a solid foundation for learning to read and mastering other academic subjects. The guide is divided by age and grade: infants and toddlers, preschool, kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and third grade. Each section includes an introduction with research-based discussion of the common literacy behaviors of the age/grade level; a list of important literacy milestones that children should be able to complete by certain age/grade; ideas and activities that can help parents help their children gain the skills needed to become successful readers; and five basic features to look for when choosing books for children. A final section presents reading room tips, explaining that reading at home should be personal, special, cozy, and fun, with the whole family involved. Suggestions for getting the most out of reading are presented (e.g., ask questions while reading and keeping a book journal). The guide concludes with a list of suggested books and a list of relevant organizations. (SM)
