Extend Instruction outside the Classroom: Take Advantage of Your Learning Management System
Jensen, Lauren A.
Computers in Libraries, v30 n6 p76-78 Jul-Aug 2010
Numerous institutions of higher education have implemented a learning management system (LMS) or are considering doing so. This web-based software package provides self-service and quick (often personalized) access to content in a dynamic environment. Learning management systems support administrative, reporting, and documentation activities. LMSs are discussed in the library literature, and several reports delve deep into the differences among available products--both commercial and open source options. LMS features are conducive to inquiry, conversation, and feedback, making LMS a viable alternative to a course-specific resource guide on a library's website. In this article, the author discusses how to take advantage of one's LMS and describes how Hewes Library at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois, used its LMS by implementing Moodle, one of the open source systems. The author offers some key points to consider in taking advantage of LMS.
