Cracking the Egg: The South Carolina Digital Library's New Perspective
Vinson, Christopher G.; Boyd, Kate Foster
Journal of Electronic Resources Librarianship, v20 n2 p117-128 2008
This article explores the historical foundations of the South Carolina Digital Library, a collaborative statewide program that ties together academic special collections and archives, public libraries, state government archives, and other cultural resource institutions in an effort to provide the state with a comprehensive database of online digital resources. This article examines how both grants and institutional support have come to define the project's future by strengthening its infrastructure. The South Carolina Digital Library is poised to complete its latest grant, which will institute three regional scanning centers across the state, develop lesson plans for K-12 classrooms using digital collections in South Carolina, and help purchase a multi-site server to combine the collections of three of South Carolina's major universities. Despite the recent major accomplishments of the organization, many challenges still face the South Carolina Digital Library as it attempts to build broad infrastructural and financial stability.
