Does a School Social Worker's Gender Matter? The Experience of Pregnant and Parenting Teens
Lucio, Robert; Dixon, Donald M.
School Social Work Journal, v32 n2 p54-71 Spr 2008
Nearly one million adolescent girls in the United States become pregnant annually, which has significant negative social and economic consequences. The number of teen pregnancies totals 50,000 in Florida, where state statutes require that these adolescents be provided with ongoing education and other support services in schools. While school social workers are at the forefront of providing these services, an examination of the literature reveals little information regarding the effect of a school social worker's gender on the experiences of adolescent pregnant and parenting females. A focus group methodology was used to find that while students had preconceived notions about the effect gender would have on their ability to trust and share information about themselves with the social worker, the experience of having a relationship with the social worker, regardless of his or her gender, was most important. This finding has an impact on school social work practice with this vulnerable population. (Contains 1 table.)
