Principal Leadership, v11 n5 p24-28 Jan 2011
This article presents an interview with Cathy Carnahan, the 2011 MetLife/NASSP National Middle Level Principal of the Year. Carnahan makes adult learning a priority to support student achievement at Duniway Middle School in McMinnville, Oregon. She describes her school as a community of learners that is a safe setting for teachers to lead and continue to learn. She says having regular one-on-one conversations with teachers about what was working and what their needs were laid the groundwork for creating a safe setting and continues to be an important part of each day. She shares that her school continues to create programs and interventions to help its struggling students find success academically and behaviorally.
