The Learning in Science Project (Primary)--LISP(P)--investigated the ideas and interests about spiders held by 8- to 10-year-old children. Data included 303 questions--and answers to some of the questions--about spiders obtained from children in four classes and from responses obtained during individual interviews with 10 children from each age level. The interviews consisted of two parts, an "interview-about-instances" (IAI) format to determine the ability of children to identify spiders and an interview to determine children's ideas about several aspects of the features and function of spiders. Responses are presented, analyzed, and discussed in separate sections representing areas considered to be of interest to teachers. They are: spider identification; spider activities; spider webs; spider habitats and retreats; food; poison; keeping a spider in school; and reaction to spiders. Other areas addressed include children's meanings for and ambiguities about words, use of analogy by students, and their sources of information about spiders. Findings indicate that spiders are an interesting and suitable topic for this age group, and that teachers can use children's ideas as a starting point to help them move closer toward the scientist's view of spiders.
