Mix, Kelly S.; Levine, Susan C.; Cheng, Yi-Ling; Young, Christopher J.; Hambrick, David Z.; Konstantopoulos, Spyros – Journal of Cognition and Development, 2017
In a previous study, Mix et al. (2016) reported that spatial skill and mathematics were composed of 2 highly correlated, domain-specific factors, with a few cross-domain loadings. The overall structure was consistent across grade (kindergarten, 3rd grade, 6th grade), but the cross-domain loadings varied with age. The present study sought to…

Kaufman, Alan S. – Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment, 2010
Flynn wrote a book devoted to the Flynn effect, featuring his theoretical explanation of why the intelligence of worldwide populations has apparently increased from generation to generation. The essence of his theorizing is that because of the societal impact of scientific technology, people of today are much more guided by abstract, rather than…

Lee, Kerry; Ng, Ee Lynn; Ng, Swee Fong – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2009
Solving algebraic word problems involves multiple cognitive phases. The authors used a multitask approach to examine the extent to which working memory and executive functioning are associated with generating problem models and producing solutions. They tested 255 11-year-olds on working memory (Counting Recall, Letter Memory, and Keep Track),…

Peer reviewedKaufman, Alan S. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1979
Speed of performance on the Revised Block Design, Picture Arrangement, and Object Assembly subtests of the Wechler Intelligence Scale for Children was related to chronological age and problem-solving ability. Speed assumed a steadily increasing role with increasing age. Children who solved the items quickly were better problem solvers. (Author)

Peer reviewedDean, Raymond S. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1978
Determined if Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised subtest patterns would differentiate the performance of emotionally disturbed and learning-disabled children. Subtests differentiated significantly between diagnostic categories. Learning-disabled children performed predictively poorer on block design, picture arrangement, and object…

Copeland, Anne P.; Hammel, Robert – 1980
Cognitive self-instructional (CSI) programs have been successful in improving problem-solving skills in many, but not all, children. The importance of understanding the influence of subject characteristics in self-control studies, while often ignored in actual research, has been repeatedly advocated verbally. This paper presents a study designed…

OSLER, SONIA F. – 1967
SEVERAL EXPERIMENTS ON THE CONCEPTUAL BEHAVIOR OF LOWER AND MIDDLE CLASS CHILDREN ARE DESCRIBED IN AN EFFORT TO CLARIFY AN APPARENT DISCREPANCY BETWEEN PREVIOUS LABORATORY FINDINGS AND OBSERVED CLASSROOM PERFORMANCE. IN THE FIRST EXPERIMENT, INDUCTIVE CONCEPT LEARNING WAS INVESTIGATED AS A FUNCTION OF SOCIAL CLASS MEMBERSHIP AND PRIOR EXPERIENCE.…
