Highlighting the findings from an assessment of the math and science performance of over 500,000 students in 41 countries at three different grade levels, the Third International Math and Science Study (TIMSS) is the world's most comprehensive and reliable study of international education achievement ever undertaken. This 13.5-minute video summarizes the study's key findings at the eighth-grade level and contains the views of business leaders, policymakers, educators, and researchers on the study's implications for America's schools. The video summarizes the findings of the TIMSS study with regard to four topics: (1) curriculum and learning expectations; (2) teaching; (3) teachers' lives; and (4) students' lives. Findings indicate that curricula in U.S. schools cover less challenging subjects and are less focused than curricula in Germany and Japan; U.S. math teachers' typical goal is to teach students how to do something rather than helping them understand mathematical concepts; while U.S. teachers typically have more college education than teachers in Germany or Japan, they have less long-term, structured apprenticeships and less opportunity to discuss teaching-related issues with colleagues; and while the U.S. divides eighth-grade students into classes of varying difficulty, Germany divides students into different schools, and Japan makes no division.
