The Measurement of Knowledge About Science and Scientists: An Investigation Into the Development of Instruments for Formative Evaluation.
Aikenhead, Glen Stirton
The test "Measurement About Science and Scientists" (Project Physics, Form 1) was prepared by choosing 101 items from the "Test on Understanding Science" and from the "Science Process Inventory" on the basis of their ability to indicate changes in students' knowledge. The method of building derived tests is described, and their use illustrated by comparing the Project Physics students with a control group of students studying other physics courses, and comparing pre- and post-test scores of Project Physics students. The experimental group performed better than the control group on the synthesized test. It was possible to determine the sources of the improvement by an item-by-item examination of the results.
