Adult Learning in the Workplace.
This document contains four papers from a symposium on adult learning in the workplace. The first paper, "Measuring Critical Thinking: Is There a Single Instrument?" (Patricia K. Leitsch, Carol A. Lentz), examines two issues: the relationship between tests measuring critical thinking and those measuring readiness for self-directed learning and the question of whether the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale measures the construct of critical thinking. Three interventions based on a new approach to training are described outlined in "Combining Constructivism and Andragogy in Computer Software Training (Albert K. Wiswell, Sarah Ward). "Learning to Learn in the Workplace" (Gene L. Roth) examines the following topics: building awareness of self-as-learner, creating active learners in the workplace, expanding the worker's repertoire of learning strategies, helping workers compensate for learning deficiencies, increasing self-monitoring and reflection by workers, and facilitating learning how to learn in the workplace. The validity of the propositions that individual adults want to have control over their learning and that learning increases when adults have such control is explored and challenged in "The Locus of Control in the Adult Learning Planning Process: A Research Agenda" (Richard A. Swanson, Tom Gamble, Joanne Provo, Teresa Tillson). (MN)
