Long, H. B. – International Journal of Lifelong Education, 1987
Data were collected from 117 college students to examine the validity of the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale. Two assumptions were generated from the results: (1) most items on the scale are correlated with the subject's total score and (2) most items are not correlated with the subject's age. (CH)

Brockett, Ralph G. – Adult Education Quarterly, 1985
It is felt that while the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale may be appropriate for certain segments of the adult population, it may be inappropriate for other groups such as those of low formal educational attainment. (Author/CT)

Herbeson, Ellen – Australian Journal of Adult and Community Education, 1991
The Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale was administered to adults enrolled in community college (n=31), undergraduate study (n=32), and graduate study (n=33). Although learning readiness appears to increase with attainment of a bachelor's degree, the increase is not statistically significant, suggesting the importance of factors other than…

Field, Lawrence – Adult Education Quarterly, 1991
Rebutting responses by Guglielmino, Long, and McCune to his earlier criticism of the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale, Field reviews the effect of homogeneity in the scale's factor structure and of negatively phrased items and concludes that the scale does not measure readiness for self-directed learning. (SK)

Straka, Gerald A.; Hinz, Ingo M. – 1996
A study reanalyzed the 1977 original form of the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS) developed by Guglielmino. It questioned whether there is an intracultural and intercultural factorial consistency, whether raters would reconfirm the eight-factor solution, and whether raters would reconfirm the main characteristics of a "highly…

Bonham, L. Adrianne – Adult Education Quarterly, 1991
Examination of the construct validity of Guglielmino's Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale points toward dislike of learning as the cause of low scores. High scores seem to result from positive attitudes toward learning in general and not specifically self-directed learning. Further studies are needed to distinguish between readiness for…

Field, Lawrence – Adult Education Quarterly, 1989
Examines the structure, validity, and reliability of Guglielmino's self-directed learning readiness scale. Reviews related literature and refutes Guglielmino's thesis. Reports data derived from an administration of the scale that reveal problems in wording and show that the scale measures a homogeneous construct not associated with readiness for…

Straka, Gerald A. – 1995
The structure and validity of Guglielmino's Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS) have been examined repeatedly. In 1979, Mourad and Torrance investigated the construct validity of the SDLRS in a study involving a random sample of 684 of the 1,500 students enrolled in the University of Georgia's Program on Gifted/Talented Education. In…

Wang, Xiaoping; And Others – 1989
A study involving teachers and administrators from 16 elementary, middle, and high schools in Tennessee investigated the factorial structure of the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS). The SDLRS includes 58 Likert-like items designed to measure the readiness of adult learners to assume self-direction in the learning process. Study…

This document contains four papers from a symposium on adult learning in the workplace. The first paper, "Measuring Critical Thinking: Is There a Single Instrument?" (Patricia K. Leitsch, Carol A. Lentz), examines two issues: the relationship between tests measuring critical thinking and those measuring readiness for self-directed…
