This article, based on the experiences of the authors at the 2002 AATG Summer seminar in Dusseldorf, explores the topic of integration in Germany on multiple levels: politically, financially, socially, and educationally. First, the authors discuss how the European Union and the Euro attempt to integrate Europe and Europeans, and how Germans have reacted to these profound political and financial changes within their country. Secondly, immigration to Germany is discussed in light of the recent results of the PISA-Study which suggests that Germany needs to reevaluate the education of non-native Germans in order to foster their integration into society. The article concludes with detailed suggestions on how instructors can teach the EU, Euro and immigration while helping students understand and empathize with the situation of non-native speakers living in Germany.
