Evaluation of the Advancing Young Adult Learning Project
Boulden, Walter T.
Adult Basic Education and Literacy Journal, v2 n1 p3-12 Spr 2008
A two-year evaluation of the Advancing Young Adult Learning (AYAL) project was conducted. AYAL is a professional development process for teachers working with 16- to 24-year-old students preparing for their General Educational Development Test (GED). It combines Youth Cultural Competency (YCC), Project-Based Learning (PBL), and strengths-based Case Management (CM). Following the implementation of the AYAL training and ongoing technical support, students in participating GED programs increased their average time of enrollment from 3 weeks prior to the program to over 20 weeks, spent an average of over 90 hours in the program, and increased their graduation rates from 10% prior to the program to 24% in the first year and over 40% in the second year.
