Peer reviewedNucci, Larry – Journal of Moral Education, 2002
Discusses the Defining Issues Test as an invaluable tool for research and practice in moral education. Explains that because such instruments are based upon previous developmental research, they are unsuitable for research on moral development. Argues that these measures stand in the way of generating new knowledge. (CAJ)

Derryberry, W. Pitt; Thoma, Stephen J. – Journal of Moral Education, 2005
Applying Snyder and Feldman's 1984 consolidation-transition model to moral judgement development has enabled further understanding of how moral judgement translates to moral functioning. In this study, 178 college students were identified as being in consolidated versus transitional phases of moral judgement development using Rest's Defining…

Peer reviewedDavison, Mark L.; Robbins, Stephen – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1978
Empirically weighted scores for Rest's Defining Issues Test were found to be more reliable than the simple sum of scores theoretically weighted sum, or Rest's p scores. They also had slightly higher correlations with Kohlberg's interview scores. Empirically weighted scores also showed more significant change in two longitudinal studies. (CTM)

Peer reviewedMacCallum, Judith A. – Journal of Moral Education, 1993
Reports on a study of 24 Australian secondary teachers before and after an inservice program on the whole-school approach to discipline. Finds that higher principled teachers provided more perspective and guidance than those in the low moral judgment group. Recommends more joint decision making by teachers in developing a school's discipline…

Kaplan, Laura E. – Journal of Social Work Education, 2006
This research examined the influence of undergraduate degree and ethics education on the moral reasoning of social workers. Statistical analyses found MSW social workers with liberal arts undergraduate degrees more likely to prefer postconventional levels of moral reasoning, defined as greater complexity of thought and principled reasoning. The…

Peer reviewedJohnston, Marilyn; Lubomudrov, Carol – Elementary School Journal, 1987
Teachers with relatively high scores on the Defining Issues Test of moral development, contrasted with teachers with relatively low scores, had a more democratic view of teacher and student roles, and saw rules as protecting the rights of individual students as well as the group's rights. (NH)

Peer reviewedPark, Jong Young; Johnson, Ronald C. – Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, 1984
Among Koreans tested on Rest's Defining Issues Test, females, urban people, and older subjects showed significantly more responses demonstrating principled morality than did males, rural people, and younger subjects. Comparisons with American results showed greater age differences in stages of moral development among Americans. Both groups showed…

Peer reviewedHolt, Ladd; And Others – Educational Research Quarterly, 1980
The relationship is investigated between teacher attitudes, role specific self-concept, and moral judgment in beginning teacher candidates; the differences in the above areas between elementary and secondary candidates; and differences between rankings of ideal teacher role descriptors by those who showed different levels of principled thinking.…

Moral Schemas and Tacit Judgement or How the Defining Issues Test Is Supported by Cognitive Science.
Peer reviewedNarvaez, Darcia; Bock, Tonia – Journal of Moral Education, 2002
Discusses three core moral judgement ideas: (1) modern schema theory, (2) automatic decision-making frequency, and (3) implicit processes as the default mode of human information processing. Compares the Defining Issues Test (measures the beginnings of moral judgement) and the Lawrence Kohlberg Moral Judgement Interview (measures the highest level…

Peer reviewedRogers, Glen – Journal of Moral Education, 2002
Draws on evidence from Alverno College's (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) longitudinal research to make the case that the Defining Issues Test (DIT) is best characterized as measuring growth in moral reasoning rather than a broader construct of moral development. Challenges current DIT theory, but is consistent with prevailing interpretations of growth on…

Peer reviewedLawrence, Jeanette A. – Journal of Moral Education, 1980
Fourteen moral judgment intervention studies are reviewed and evaluated to address two questions: "Is it possible to stimulate moral judgment development in an educational setting?" and "Does the Defining Issues Test index such moral judgment changes?" These studies affirm the second question. Half of them produced significant…

Results indicate…

Dras, Stephen R.; And Others – 1983
The relation of moral reasoning to moral behavior has been the subject of a substantial number of empirical studies; it may be more productive to employ a configuration of characteristics to predict moral behavior. To investigate the relation of moral reasoning and personality variables to moral behavior, 74 undergraduates, 30 males and 44…
