A Remedial Math Program in a Secondary School.
Fisher, Margaret A.
The purpose of this practicum was to develop and implement a remedial mathematics program to improve the basic mathematics skills of seventh-grade students at Nathan B. Young Junior High School who fail to master the required minimal objectives on the seventh-grade "Criterion Referenced Test" (CRT). Target students were screened for their mathematical ability on the "Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills" (CTBS). Based on the test results, students were assigned to the Compensatory Education classes for daily instruction in mathematics. Their mathematical weaknesses were diagnosed and individualized prescriptions were instituted for each student in the program. Compensatory Education mathematics teachers attended inservice meetings that provided professional training in the implementation of the Intuitive Math strategy. After the treatment period, the CTBS and the CRT were administered to the target population. The posttests revealed that the behavioral objectives were successful. Therefore, it is concluded that the Intuitive Math strategy integrated with the Individualized Approach is beneficial to students with basic mathematical problems. As a result of conducting this practicum, this program has been adopted by five additional seventh-grade centers within the Hillsborough County School District. (Author)
