The National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children (TLC) conducted research on the use of Structured Sensory Interventions for Traumatized Children, Adolescents, and Parents (SITCAP). The use of SITCAP was evaluated in two programs, one working with traumatized children 6-12 years of age called the I Feel Better Now! Program and another called SITCAP-ART, working with at-risk adjudicated adolescents in residential or outpatient settings. In both studies, the primary intervention included a series of structured, trauma-focused drawing activities engaging implicit processes and trauma memories. Research showed statistically significant and remarkable reductions across all trauma subcategories identified in the DSM-IVR (American Psychiatric Association, 2000) as well as reductions across mental health categories measured by the Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist and Youth Self Report. The use of drawing in the SITCAP model is very structured and specific to the major themes or experiences of trauma. This article discusses how drawing is used as a tool to reduce symptoms in those who have experienced trauma, allowing them the focus necessary to regain a sense of control and safety in their lives.
