Adult Basic Education. Adult Performance Level Curriculum Handbook: Occupational Knowledge, Consumer Economics, Health and Safety, Government and Law, Community Resources.
Harding, Mildred; Thomas, Claire
Beginning with a brief project report, this curriculum guide is intended to enable teachers to work effectively with Adult Performance Level (APL) programs. The manual (1) clarifies the concept of APL, (2) describes the APL-ABE (Adult Basic Education) curriculum at Florida Junior College (FJC), (3) provides examples of effective lesson plans for APL-ABE, and (4) identifies useful APL materials and resources. Chapters 1-4 briefly introduce APL, discuss its history and philosophy, and describe successful ABE and APL-ABE teachers. Topics in chapter 5 on the APL-ABE curriculum include fundamental concepts, general framework of APL description of competency, basic skills as described by ABE, knowledge-areas as described by APL, and APL-ABE materials and resources. Chapters 6 and 7 describe two programs in the APL-ABE program at FJC--reading and English as a Second Language--including purpose, successful teacher characteristics, materials, and curriculum. In chapter 8 planning is described in terms of defining intermediate and enabling objectives (end behaviors and learning steps) for each general objective, making lesson plans for specific classroom tasks, and testing. Fifteen lesson plans (three from each knowledge area) and tests for knowledge areas are provided as examples. The final chapter (9) provides useful professional information: local resources (agencies and publications) in APL life areas, publishers of ABE materials, APL-ABE bibliography, and audiovisual materials.
