Developing and Writing Language Objectives
Staples, Megan; Truxaw, Mary P.; Cruz, Vanessa
Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12, v113 n10 p828-834 Oct 2020
Math and language are inextricably connected. Math cannot be taught without naming certain concepts and finding ways to express mathematical ideas. With the increasing demands on teachers to meet the needs of diverse learners, the role of language development in the mathematics classroom must be at the forefront of instruction. Identifying and teaching toward language objectives can keep language front and center as well as support teachers' content learning goals. To support this work, this article offers a "primer" on language objectives for the mathematics class and illustrates a process by which teachers can identify language objectives relevant to their content objectives to realize stronger, language-rich instruction.
