Evaluation of prior learning for the External Degree Program at Florida International University is described. Efforts in the following areas are presented: (1) implementation and evaluation of the competency-based assessment tool, (2) integration of the assessment process with other processes of the External Degree Program and the entire university, (3) establishment of disciplinary competencies to be used as indicators in the assessment of learning from work experiences, and (4) reconciliation of the assessment process with the need for predetermined competencies in academic disciplines. Emphasis is also given to the characteristics, application, and implications of the standards used in the assessment of student learning. (Author/MV)
