The Relationship between Executive Function Skills and Motivation in Preschool Children
Journal of Pedagogical Research, v9 n4 p35-52 2025
This study aims to examine preschool children's executive function skills and motivation about various variables and determine the relationship between these two domains. A correlational survey method was employed in the study, and the study group consisted of 224 children aged 48-72 months attending preschool education institutions in Türkiye. The data collection tools used in the study were the Family Information Form, the Childhood Executive Function Inventory, and the Dimensions of Mastery Questionnaire for Preschool Children. The findings revealed that children's executive function skills significantly differed based on gender, age, and type of school attended. At the same time, their motivation significantly varied according to gender, the duration of preschool education, and the type of school attended. Furthermore, a significant relationship was found between children's motivation and executive function skills. It is recommended that educators adopt suitable pedagogical approaches that incorporate specific arrangements, activities, and instructional methods designed to foster the development of these skills in children.
