Ways in which the National Library of Medicine's online data file of audiovisual instructional materials (AVLINE) can be searched are described. The search approaches were developed with the assistance of data analysts at NLM trained in reference services. AVLINE design, search strategies, and acquisition of the materials are reported. (LBH)

Information gathered from faculty members about nontextbook educational materials is reviewed by the Association of American Medical Colleges before cataloging, indexing, and abstracting at the National Library of Medicine for listing in AVLINE, a computer information service available through the MEDLARS system. Use of sequential data display on the Davenport diagram mated with computer techniques offers solutions to both data storage and teaching problems related to blood gas determinations. An example of using the technique for teaching interpretation of data to medical students is given. (JT)

Collecting patient morbidity information in academic ambulatory practice is useful for research, practice management, and evaluation and planning of educational programs. Three methods of morbidity data collection were compared to determine which was most accurate. (Author/MLW)

Reports studies of the validity of medical data recorded and computerized at University of Western Ontario family medical centers. In the 59 encounters observed residents recorded an average of 1.51 problems and observers 2.45. Implications for medical education, audit, research, computer systems, and quality of care are discussed. (JT)
