Discusses the problems of teaching current events to primary grade students and suggests methods of instruction. Problems include determining areas of interest, levels of knowledge, extent of misconceptions, and ability to understand a given issue. Seventy six teachers and 737 social studies students from rural high schools in six states were surveyed to determine whether rural secondary social studies programs discuss topics and themes that provide an insight into rural America. Findings suggest that rural life-styles are inadequately portrayed in social studies curricula. (AM)

The information revolution is making various impacts on social studies. Students are children of this age and are learning social ideas from technology. The information revolution should be part of the social studies curriculum. Unresolved questions (e.g., Who should write computer software?) and some thoughts on the future are discussed. (RM)
