Item overlap coefficient (IOC) formulas are discussed, providing six warnings about their calculation and interpretation and some explanations of why item overlap influences the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory and the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory factor structures. (SLD)

Separate analyses of five-, six- and seven-factor solutions for the first 168 Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory item responses from a large unselected sample of public mental health patients revealed close correspondence with the six factors derived by Overall, Hunter, and Butcher. The underlying structure of the Depression scale of the revised Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2) was studied using dichotomous Rasch model and factor analysis with the normative sample of 2,600 subjects. Results reveal two distinct subscales (mental depression and physical depression) in place of a homogenous set of items. (SLD)
